Space

SPACE. There are clubs, there are super clubs - and then there is Space. A staggering six-room extravaganza built across three levels, Space began its life as just your average conference centre in Playa Den Bossa, beginning its metamorphosis into über-club in 1989 when Pepe Rosello took over the venue and transformed it into a discotheque… the discotheque that would pave the way for daytime clubbing and set standards all the other clubs would be aiming to reach for years to come.

But let’s skip ahead a-l-m-o-s-t 20 years, to 2008 when the club is about to throw open its doors to eager clubbers, DJs, music enthusiasts, performers, celebrities - oh let’s just be honest, everyone in Ibiza! The legendary opening and closing parties incorporate a giant outdoor arena, which on regular days operates as a car park and the six remaining rooms are as follows:

1. THE SUNSET TERRACE
This is the new incarnation of the original and very famous Space terrace, the terrace seasoned Ibiza goers wax lyrical about the good old days. But let’s face facts now. Those days are gone. OK, so we can’t dance in the open air as planes fly overhead BUT let’s not dwell on the past! These days, the Sunset Terrace is the area you walk directly into once you’ve handed in your ticket at the door - still incredibly busy during daylight hours on a Sunday. Think camouflage netting where a roof should be, sunshine streaming through the gaps, huge fans on full blast and hundreds of happy clubbers with their arms in the air. Once the sun goes down you’ll find it less hectic and once the clock strikes 12, sadly the law states that the music must be turned down, so you may as well head indoors where the real action starts to take place.

2. DISCOTECA
What many consider to be the true heart of Space, the Discoteca is a clubber’s paradise - lasers, disco balls, cleverly constructed lighting rigs, podiums and above all, a huge DJ booth all you music geeks can linger behind to watch your heroes do their thing. Bypass the Sunset Terrace, walk straight ahead after you’ve entered and this is where the biggest of big names in dance - think Carl Cox, Felix Da Housecat, Sasha, James Zabiela, Tiefschwarz, DJ Hell and many more - come out to play. Four hour sets are no uncommon in this room, and in comparison to so many other clubs, the cavernous room is actually so well air-conditioned you’ll find it hard to leave, no matter who is gracing the decks in other parts of the club…

3. MAIN TERRACE
The new terrace, as it’s generally referred to by those in the know. Hang a right after you’ve come through the main entrance and this big square-ish room - which also plays home to the VIP section - with a raised DJ booth and bars around the perimeters is streaming full of sunlight throughout the daylight hours and at night, turns into a premier clubbing destination. With a sound system that will blow your ears off, three easy-access doors to other parts of the club and a selection of the who’s who of the world’s best DJs doing their thing night after night - Danny Tenaglia, Steve Lawler, Miss Kittin and Ben Watt to name a few - it would be easy to forget that there’s an entire COMPLEX of clubbing at your fingertips (or the tips of your toes) after a few hours in here.

4. EL SALON
The newest addition to the Space interior, El Salon was introduced in 2007 to much fanfare and plenty of applause. Take the right hand exit from the Main Terrace and just before the exit, you’ll see a small-ish room, complete with a tree trunk in the centre and seats that look like they’ve been carved out of rock round the edges (with ultra glam white cushions of course) and you’ve reached El Salon. With a roof similar to that of the Sunset Terrace, the music in El Salon - which can generally be defined as true Balearic beats - gets shushed at about midnight, but until then, there’s plenty of space to dance and a bar that is much less crowded than anywhere else in the club - but that’s our little secret, OK?

5. THE RED BOX
Head up the stairs from the Discoteca and on your right you’ll see a red glow, emanating above a tiny doorway. Inside the tiny doorway, you’ll find a tiny room. Inside the tiny room, you’re likely to find a more eclectic musical selection - on some nights it houses breaks, others hard techno - and a bunch of committed clubbers who’ve found their spiritual home. The Red Box could often be dubbed the Sweat Box, due to the amount of people who insist on cramming themselves in at once, but when you’re onto a good thing! Don’t forget to peer out of the tiny windows beside the DJ booth, where you can look directly down onto the action taking place downstairs.

6. PREMIER ETAGE
When you need a bit of a breather, fancy some fresh air, want somewhere a little quieter to have a chat - Premier Etage is the place to be. Situated on the roof, it’s an open air respite from the controlled chaos indoors, complete with ambient music and plenty of bar space to go round. A huge feature piece of furniture, a giant yellow padded tube is a popular place to hang but our tip is to stick with the couches strategically placed around the terrace area - the yellow plastic can get kind of sweaty and sticky in the peak of the season!
